Swiss Masks

The Museum's large and fine collection of Swiss masks was assembled almost entirely by Baron Eduard von der Heydt in the 1920s. It consists of 162 masks from Central Switzerland, Flums, and the Lötschental. All the masks were carved in the late 19th and early 20th century and were worn during carnival. The collection also includes works by Albert Anton Willi of Ems which do not belong to the carnival tradition.

Eight masks from the Tyrol and southern Germany, dating to the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries, complement the collection.
