  • In the first two decades of the 20th century, the “Hill of Truth” in Ascona was a place for anarchists, people who dreamed of a new world, vegetarians and anthroposophists. In 1926 von der Heydt bought his first large piece of land on the hill and soon afterwards he submitted a building project for approval. Amidst idyllic scenery he erected a symbol of modernism: a hotel in the Bauhaus style which was opened in 1929.

He installed his art collection in the generous rooms of the hotel as well as in the lush, blossoming landscape filled with magnolias and palms. The many international guests were – as several entries in the guest book attest – enthralled by the interplay of art and the spirit of the place, the “sacred earth” (Salmony). Von der Heydt met his guests in white shorts and a loose shirt, always nonchalant and smiling.

He himself lived a few steps from the hotel in the Casa Anatta which he had furnished with Chinese paintings and African and Indian sculptures. At first Ascona was only a temporary home but from the mid-1930s until his death in 1964 it became his principal residence.

Today, Monte Verità is a state-of-the-art conference and cultural centre, managed by the Foundation of the same name. Situated on seven hectares of tranquil, lush parkland with breathtaking panoramas of Lake Maggiore, it offers visitors a truly unique experience.

Exclusively for members of the Rietberg-Society, the museum offers two trips to Monte Verità, accompanied by the curator of the exhibition. The trips include a tour of the facility of Monte Verità, a visit to the Museo Comunale d'Arte Moderna, Ascona and the botanical gardens of the Brissago Islands. (Trips sold out)
