Daoist cosmology

  • According to Chinese tradition, the world consists of two parallel planes which are separated by time and space. One is the material plane, the “space of yang”, and corresponds to the realm of humans, animals and plants. The other plane is the world of the deceased, the immaterial world of ghosts, which corresponds to the “space of yin”.

Both planes, yin and yang, influence each other and are mutually dependent. On the one hand, beings of the world of humans can be used as tools by the powers of the parallel universe. On the other, humans can summon ghosts and gods for advice.

The lowest step of the linking system between the humans in the space of yang and the beings - deceased, ghosts or gods - in the space of ying is ancestor worship which is regarded as the decisive element of traditional Chinese culture.
